Urban Surgery is a research-by-design project that explores how architecture can engage with the atmosphere, perception and identity of place.
Set in Muide-Meulestede, the project responds to the historical, cultural and spatial traces embedded within the island. Rather than proposing a fixed masterplan, it develops a catalogue of actions aimed at creating future atmospheres and improving the quality of public space across different scales and timeframes.
The project is grounded in a close reading of the existing environment, drawing connections between the colours, materials, textures and sounds that shape the island's character. Through a series of flexible and adaptable interventions, it seeks to establish new relationships between past, present and future while responding to the uncertainty and indeterminacy of urban change.
Urban Surgery examines how architecture can emerge from a strong awareness of both physical and mental presence. Through observation, imagination and site-specific interventions, the project reinterprets the visible and often imperceptible qualities of place, proposing architecture as a tool for understanding, revealing and transforming the everyday environment.
