Atmospheres is a research project that explores how hidden relationships, stories and perceptions can be translated into architectural imagination.
Starting from the question of what future atmospheres can emerge by revealing unseen scenarios, the project investigates atmosphere as something shaped not only by the tangible elements of the built environment, but also by the intangible sensitivities, memories and associations attached to it. Focusing on the island of Muide-Meulestede, the research examines how these often overlooked dimensions can become a source for architectural thinking and future spatial transformation.
Through photography, mapping and narrative construction, reality was decomposed and reassembled into alternative readings of place. Cross-sectional photographs of the island were collected and organised into a matrix, creating a tool that allowed relationships between disparate elements to emerge. From this matrix, narratives and speculative sections were developed, combining close observation with personal interpretation and imagination.
The project explores storytelling and imagination as design tools, using them to reveal latent possibilities within the existing environment. The outcome takes the form of visual narratives, atmospheric sections and speculative future scenarios that translate the unseen into an architectural dimension.
